A (Rather Mysterious) Review

My boyfriend is a major film nerd, and one of our favorite long-distance dates is a movie + video call. 😁

We get to see each other’s reactions real time and discuss the movie a little afterwards. Most of the time, it’s us filling each other in on favorite movies the other missed (he’s a veritable movie tour guide 😁), but we recently found a film we both hadn’t seen yet, which proved quite fun. 😉

Instead of a book review, I thought today I’d share a movie review.

Enola Holmes

As a certified aficionado of all things Sherlock Holmes, I was quite excited to watch this movie with my boyfriend.

I very much enjoyed the unique storytelling style. The scrapbooked scenes accompanying narration were delightfully Victorian and fresh. 

Speaking of narration… There is no longer a fourth wall. For me, this aspect of the movie was delightful, though a little misplaced in an action scene.

Millie Bobby Brown was FANTASTIC. I look forward to seeing her in more roles, for sure. Henry Cavill wasn’t quite believable as Sherlock, but I enjoyed his brotherliness and the air that he definitely was picking up on more than others. 😉 Louis Partridge was delightful.

The mystery was slightly guessable for me, but intensely fun. I did find the storyline with Eudoria a disappointment though after reflection I understand it more. Enola choosing her own path was fabulous. Some of the themes were both too on the nose and too subtle for me which was my main dislike about the movie.

A+ for utterly feminine costuming during fight scenes. And the soundtrack = 😍

  1. This was a great review! I’ve been hearing a lot about this movie, and now you’re making me want to see it! (It’s been great to read your posts again, I’ve been gone on a long hiatus and your posts are always superb. 💕)
    Also, cool that you have a boyfriend too??? I only just saw your announcement post because I haven’t been up here in a while, but when I read it I was like 👁️👄👁️ That is awesome!!! 💕💕💕 I was legit so excited!!!!

  2. i recently watched it, it was good. my brother and dad complained a lot about some items being inconsistent to the time frame XDD

    I’m also in a long distance relationship. in the 19 months we’ve been dating… we have not done a movie+ video call. we’ve considered it twice. tried once… (first attempt was watching tangled. at the time we didn’t have disney+ so i tried to put the disc on my computer and screen share during a call… turns out computers dont like that and will turn the screen gray.

      Aw, nice! Oof, yeah. We’ve had a lot of technical difficulties too. We’ve found a few Chrome extensions that have worked nicely, if you’d like the names. Here’s hoping you can get it to work sometime!

We usually run a Skype on the sidebar. If the internet allows, we like to use TwoSeven (https://twoseven.xyz/) for Netflix and Amazon Prime movies since it has a video call and chat built in. 😉

  4. We recently watched Enola Holmes and we looooved it!! (now we want to watch BBC’s Sherlock Holmes again XD).

    I loved how it had the feel of BBC’s Holmes series (for example, all the clues and hints being put together) yet still being unique to its own story line. Have you read the original book series by Nancy Springer?

    And yes, where is the sequel?! I really hope they do more movies in the future. 🙂

  6. My younger sister read the series, so I was always asking her if this scene or that was in the first book. She said it followed the book pretty well (then I saw an article that said Millie Brown and her sister were fans of the book series, which inspired them to make the movie. So yay for sisters!)
    Ps. One last quesiton: have you ever heard of the documentary film called ‘The Social Dilemma’? It’s also on Netflix.

        I liked The Social Dilemma; I thought it was really well done. The film did a great job using analogies to explain how technology works. And what the experts say at the end is mind-blowing (I sense a conversation starter over the family holidays). Definitely worth checking out. 🙂
