Update on My Summer Reading

At the beginning of June, I wrote a blog post all about My Summer Reading Stack. Now that’s summer is officially over (for almost three weeks 😛 ), it’s time to update y’all on how I did. 😉 img_20170602_160148654-e1496445631928

Nonfiction

The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges and Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain were my nonfiction picks for this summer. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to read either of them, but I’m still looking forward to reading the first one soon. 😉 (Don’t look at me like that. I know I fell down on the nonfiction job again. 😛 )

Fiction

At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon and The Martian by Andy Weir were my priority fiction picks. I. LOVE. MITFORD. ❤ Seriously, that book is so sweet, and I have used copies of the next two books just waiting for me. 😀 The Martian is a huge book and gets so nerdily, awesomely, tech-y at some points that it’s best taken in small doses. I’m currently about 2/3’s of the way through an edited copy, and I’m definitely not abandoning it just because summer is over. 😉

Re-reads

The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau and The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy were a couple favorites I purposed to revisit. 😉 I didn’t make it to reading The People of Sparks (*sticks out lip*), but Sir Percy and I had a delightful time together. 😉

    Nothing to Fear, The Star under the City ;), Crossroads, The Blue Blur, Messenger (again 😉 ), the last Baker Family Series book…………..

      2. Kinda. It’s one of those books, that you don’t necessarily like but would read it again. 😉

        I started it last week and just finished it. But I read most of it in a day!

This summer, I read… God and the Transgender Debate by Andrew Walker (good book), basically the entire collection of books after Ender’s Game (SO MANY), and several other books halfway, including Shadow of the Almighty by Elizabeth Elliot (re-read), Jesus Among Secular Gods (worldview! logic! 😀 ) by Ravi Zacharias and another guy, and Postmillenialism by Keith Mathison (to learn about what my family believes about the end times). Oh, and I read the Hunger Games to find out what it was all about… didn’t like it much, hoping to like the movies better. Now I want to go read the City of Ember again. 😀

    1. Oh, I also read a book called the Happiness Project, which was really good! I think what I got most out of it was ideas for how to pursue happiness intentionally, instead of just being busy and discontent.
      And I just put an ILL request in for Do Good Fences Make Good Neighbors: What History Teaches Us About Strategic Barriers and International Security, which is a more technical book that I heard about in an article about France’s Maginot Line in World War II. Sounded like it could be interesting and relevant (and also the kind of thing you’d be required to read for college…), we shall see. 🙂

    2. Wow, those sound like some really amazing (and important to our day and age) non-fiction reads! What do you think of the Ender’s Game series?

      Oh, funny! I did it backwards. I watched the Hunger Games movies (filtered) first, and now I might try the books (also filtered). 😉 The movies were actually pretty good! I liked the second one the best. It was more hopeful or something. 😉

The Ender’s Game series is really cool – sometimes it’s hard to keep everything straight (can’t imagine _writing_ it), but Orson Scott Card is crazy good when it comes to creating fictional worlds with realistic politics and international (and interstellar) problems. The intricacies of it all amaze me.
        I like reading the book first (usually it’s better :P), so now that I’ve read the Hunger Games (_and_ I have an external DVD drive so I can actually watch DVDs on my laptop), I intend to watch the movie series at somepoint. Glad to hear the movies are better! 😀

  3. Thanks for the list of books you have read this Summer. I have never read the “Scarlet Pimpernel”,but will some day. Did you know that the Hallmark Channel recently had “At Home In MItford” movie ?

      1. It was a lot of fun, actually, as I haven’t done a reading challenge like that before. It wasn’t just genre, it was things like “A book with jewelry on the cover” or “a book that has a car trip in it.” So I was looking for all kinds of books. 🙂 I’m hoping to create one for Read Another Page in January.
