We Are Writers

This is just a little something I thought of (not at three in the morning specifically but definitely when I should have been sleeping). Please note that it isn’t poetry–I can’t write that for the life of me!–but I hope it blesses you. 😉 Enjoy!

When we wake up at three in the morning with a great idea and can’t remember it the next morning…

We are writers.

When the only thing on paper after two minutes of “writing” is a chocolate stain…

We are writers.

When we spend hours on Pinterest and call it brain breaks or research…

We are writers.

When we tuck a new vocabulary word into our pocket to show everyone…

We are writers.

When we check out Dickens to learn about 19th century London and children’s first chapter books “just to keep up with our genre”…

We are writers.

When we Google synonyms…

We are writers.

When we read a famous book and criticize the denouement…

We are writers.

When we half finish our story then completely start over…

We are writers.

When we win Scrabble with all the Victorian terms for alcohol…

We are writers.

When we lose Taboo because our brain is on an absolutely different wavelength…

We are writers.

When our idea sheet on the bedside table fills too quickly…

We are writers.

When we stare at the cursor blinking at us on the screen and wonder about lunch…

We are writers.

When we edit our story the night before it is due for publication…

We are writers.

When we fall so head-over-heels in love with our characters that we want to write them a twelve book series…

We are writers.

When we recite conversations over and over in our heads to get them just right…

We are writers.

When we hug a tiny bit of praise and our manuscript to ourselves…

We are writers.

When we are so obsessed with our own created ‘ship’ that we use the couple’s names for internet passwords…

We are writers.

When we bury an embarrassing manuscript so deep only an archaeologist could find it…

We are writers.

When we hate dictionaries but love words…

We are writers.

When our travel dreams include Narnia and a Little Free Library…

We are writers.

When we design a book’s cover and cast the movie before two words are written…

We are writers.

When we sigh over our own measly word counts

We are writers.

When someone thinks we are tired, but we are actually just planning a six epic series…

We are writers.

When we cry over the death of a character while planning their funeral…

We are writers.

When we have to remind ourselves to only play cupid with imaginary people…

We are writers.

When we search for the perfect term to describe an obscure gesture…

We are writers.

When we interview anyone who will listen about the best way to escape a castle…

We are writers.

When daydreaming is part of our job…

We are writers.

When our birthday list consists of books, a vintage typewriter, and a WriteMind planner

We are writers.

When we write a letter that turns into the next “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich”…

We are writers.

When we check Facebook during a character’s last words…

We are writers.

When every character has to have the perfect name (including the dog)…

We are writers.

When we speak mostly in literary quotes…

We are writers.

When someone asks us how we are and the answer is a word count…

We are writers.

When we quote ourselves and no one recognizes it because we are still unpublished…

We are writers.

When the perfect character arrives in our brains without a story…

We are writers.

When our story notes are unreadable because they’ve been changed so many times…

We are writers.

When we fall in love with someone else’s writing just because they are a ‘pantser’ too…

We are writers.

When our idea of perfect dialogue comes from The Princess Bride

We are writers.

When we freak out over a picture that exactly matches one in our minds…

We are writers.

When we are excited to see a complete stranger that looks like someone we “know”…

We are writers.

When the best day of our lives includes 2k words, chocolate, and tea…

We are writers.

When we are giddy over our first sale…

We are writers.

When our observation skills are overdeveloped…

We are writers.

When lined paper is a precious commodity…

We are writers.

When we watch word counts like the stock market…

We are writers.

When we open a child’s eyes to the wonder around them…

We are writers.

When we provide them with something safe and satisfying to read…

We are writers.

When we brighten someone’s day in just a few paragraphs…

We are writers.

When we move them to compassion for the lost…

We are writers.

When we give them something to quote for the rest of their lives…

We are writers.

When we teach them a new word or historical fact…

We are writers.

When we lead them to the throne of grace…

We are writers. And we are blessed.
