“Princess Irene’s discovery of a secret stair leads to a wonderful revelation. At the same time, Curdie overhears a fiendish plot by the goblins. Princess Irene & Curdie must make sense of their separate knowledge & foil the goblins’ schemes.” (from Goodreads)
I enjoyed this book by George MacDonald so much! The writing style was delightful; I felt almost as if I were a child having it told to me. I loved the parents. It’s rare to find wise, supportive, and loving parents that are so involved in the adventure. The cobs were horrible and hilarious at the same time–perfect villains for a children’s story. š My favorite character was down-to-earth Curdie with trusting Irene as a close second. Just a note that there is slight magic, a bit of quirky worldview, and the weird creatures are referred to as goblins and sometimes demons.
Best quote: “I won’t be so silly again, I promise you. At least–I’m rather afraid to promise–but if I am, I promise to be very sorry for it–I do.”
Altogether I found this to be a delightful book for older readers who are young at heart.

Great review! Are the parents Curdie’s? I don’t remember them : 0
Obviously it’s been too long and I need to read it again!

Thanks! His were the ones I was mainly thinking of, but Irene’s king-papa is pretty awesome too. š
